NO.9|ESSENCE & FLEUR Vol.3 Muguet|FRAGRANCE LAB.BLOG

Hello everyone,

FRAGRANCE LAB.BLOG, brought to you by fragrance manufacturer ART LAB., is back with another installment.

Continuing the conversation about fragrances of fascinating flowers from the 8th issue we will talk about the fragrance of “Muguet” as ESSENCE & FLEUR Vol. 3.

Classification of Muguet and its fragrance

Muguet is a French name that may be unfamiliar to some, it is called “Lily of the valley”in English.

It is called Suzuran in Japanese, it grows wild in various places, so it is a familiar flower that is often seen in Japan.

It is a type of perennial plant belonging to the convallaria Nolinoideae family and is in full bloom from May to early summer.

As shown in the photo, it is characterized by its lovely shape of the flower like a small white bell.

Its fragrance is clear with a slight green tinge, and I feel that pure and elegant are the perfect words to describe it.

I think the fragrance is well liked by many people.

Is Muguet fragrance not an essential oil?

Muguet is often used in floral perfumes, so much so that it is called one of the three major florals along with rose and jasmine.

However, essential oils are almost never used in Muguet fragrances.

When essential oil is extracted from natural Muguet, the original scent of Muguet is lost, and that pure scent cannot be reproduced.

Because of this history, a synthetic fragrance called “Hydroxycitronellal” was developed at the beginning of the 20th century, which had a Muguet-like aroma.

Subsequently, various synthetic fragrances such as “Lilial” and “Lyral” were developed by various perfume companies in order to reproduce the natural fragrance of Muguet.

Perfumers around the world have combined these synthetic fragrances to recreate the fragrance of Muguet as they envisioned it.

A flower that brings happiness

Do you know that there is a day called “Jour de muguet”?

Every year on May 1, “Muguet Day,” people in France give Muguet flowers to their family, friends, and loved ones as a token of their appreciation and affection.

It is said that the recipient of a Muguet flower will be blessed with happiness.

The origin of this tradition dates back to May 1, 1591, when Charles IX received a gift of Muguet flowers.

Charles IX was so delighted by the gift, so he started gifting it in his court every May 1 from the following year.

The French perfume company Guerlain sells a perfume called “Muguet” in limited quantities every May 1 in honor of this “Muguet Day”.

I remember that it was a green floral fragrance with a soothing scent typical of Muguet that reminded me of the arrival of spring.

Recent studies have reported that the fragrance of Muguet can be expected to reduce work errors and alleviate fatigue.

We would like to recommend this fragrance not only as a gift for a loved one, but also to those who work at a desk for long hours.

We also have a fragrance containing Muguet as a room fragrance below, which we hope you will try if you wish to enjoy it in the place of your choice.
